New LEGO GWP makes it even easier to build a purple Classic Space astronaut

Building a purple LEGO Classic Space astronaut is about to get even easier, as one of the rare pieces required is due to appear in an easily-accessible promotional set later this year.

Across the current rainbow of LEGO Classic Space astronauts, purple is one of the most difficult to acquire – mostly because it’s never been released as a complete minifigure, with its individual parts instead scattered across different sets. The torso was included in 2022’s 71032 Series 22 Collectible Minifigures, while the helmet and air tanks first popped up in this year’s 80111 Lunar New Year Parade.

The same air tanks then appeared again in March’s 60361 Ultimate Stunt Riders Challenge, offering another avenue to adding them to your collection. But if you want the helmet, your only option until now has been to spring specifically for the Chinese New Year set (or pick it up directly on the secondary market). That’s all about to change, however, thanks to an upcoming VIP Add-on Pack.

As revealed through the building instructions portal at LEGO.com, 40608 Halloween Fun VIP Add-On Pack is the latest in a series of what can best be described as bags of spare parts, given away as gifts-with-purchase at LEGO.com and in LEGO Stores. The spooky set for 2023 includes pumpkins, spiders, skulls, leaves, waffles, a cat, a pie – and at least two purple Classic Space helmets.

Why are they there? What do they have to do with Halloween? These are not questions we are interested in learning the answer to, because all that matters is that the rare purple helmet will finally be more easily accessible. The VIP Add-On Packs typically require a spend of just £50 / $50 / €50 – matching the minimum spend for free delivery from LEGO.com in the UK and Europe – so chances are you’ll find yourself with at least one eventually.

Exactly when 40608 Halloween Fun VIP Add-On Pack will be available has yet to be confirmed, but the safe money is on October for hopefully obvious reasons. Whenever it happens, the cost of the helmet will hopefully come down on the aftermarket, too: at the moment, you’re looking at an average price of £11.46 for the piece on BrickLink, with the cheapest options in the UK starting at an even £12.

From the one image available at the moment, it’s impossible to tell whether 40608 Halloween Fun VIP Add-On Pack also includes the purple air tanks, but those are at least a little cheaper to acquire separately if not: you can grab them for a fiver in the UK on BrickLink at the moment. Their average price is a similarly-high £11.38, though – so fingers crossed they’re hiding in that pile of bricks somewhere…

Better yet: next year’s supposed Space-themed LEGO Collectible Minifigures series could just give us a full purple astronaut in one fell swoop.

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
