Jack Black reportedly cast in upcoming live-action Minecraft movie

The upcoming live-action Minecraft movie has reportedly found its stars, with Jack Black said to be joining Jason Momoa in the video game adaptation.

The LEGO Minecraft theme expanded again on January 1, 2024, with seven new sets being released and now available online and in stores. In addition, rumours suggest that at least six more models based on Mojang’s smash hit video game will be arriving at some point this year, potentially including 21265, the theme’s first 18+ build which is said to be priced at $79.99 and could appear in June.

Beyond the next 12 months, 2025 also looks to be a huge year for Minecraft, with big news for fans being reported by Deadline today. According to the industry publication’s sources, actor Jack Black will be joining the cast of the upcoming live-action Minecraft movie, which has seemingly been confirmed by the star himself in a tongue-in-cheek Instagram post.

The film is reportedly due to begin production any day now, with Black said to be taking on the role of Steve, alongside Jason Momoa and Wednesday’s Emma Myers in undisclosed roles. Napoleon Dynamite director Jared Hess will be handling the reins of the Minecraft movie, with the Warner Bros. and Legendary project currently scheduled for release on April 4, 2025.

The plot of the Minecraft movie is still under wraps, although Mojang/Microsoft are said to be very involved in the film’s production. Black most recently lent his impressive pipes to the Super Mario Bros. Movie, voicing the villainous Bowser, helping to propel the video game adaptation to a $1.36 billion box office haul worldwide and earning himself a Golden Globe nomination for co-writing and performing the film’s memorable love song, ‘Peaches.’
