X-Men ’97 series creator fired from show ahead of Disney+ debut

It looks as if the premiere of next week’s X-Men ’97 animated series on Disney+ will now be going ahead without one of the show’s key creators.

Marvel fans have been looking forward to next week’s debut of X-Men ’97 for some time, with the ‘90s Fox Kids show set to return with a two-episode premiere on Disney+ on March 20. The animated series is a huge slice of nostalgia for some and the first outing for Marvel’s mutants in 2024 ahead of this year’s live-action Deadpool & Wolverine.

However, the show’s arrival will now be slightly bittersweet as creator, producer and writer Beau DeMayo is said to have been fired from the series. According to The Hollywood Reporter, DeMayo will no longer take part in any promotion for X-Men ’97 or take a creative role in any future seasons.

The report notes that he had already finished work on Season 2 of the show, had been discussing ideas for a third season and was due to attend the Hollywood premiere of X-Men ’97 later today. DeMayo had previously worked on such Marvel properties as Moon Knight and the upcoming Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali, so his sudden departure is all the more surprising.

There has been no official word from Disney, Marvel or DeMayo as to the exact reasons for his firing, but THR states that it happened sometime last week. The creator’s company email account was deactivated and he deleted his own Instagram account without any updates regarding the situation.

There’s currently only one LEGO Marvel set based on the upcoming animated series, with 76281 X-Men X-Jet available right now. X-Men ’97 will debut on Disney+ for all subscribers from March 20, with the first two episodes of the show dropping on the same day.
