LEGO drops teaser for Donkey Kong sets

The LEGO Group has just dropped a teaser for LEGO Super Mario Donkey Kong sets – and it appears it will be a family affair.

After teasing the imminent arrival of Donkey Kong on Super Mario Day, the LEGO Group has now revealed a first look at not just the man (or monkey) himself, but several members of the Kong family. There’s enough lore surrounding Donkey Kong to warrant an entire generational lineage page on the Donkey Kong Wiki, so there are more than enough characters to draw inspiration from – and the LEGO Group aren’t holding back.

To start us off, we of course have Donkey Kong as the main event. He’s joined by his grandfather Cranky Kong, along with his trusty staff. Also known as Donkey Kong Senior, Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong and acts as the elder of the family.

Next up we head to the younger generation to meet Donkey Kong’s nephew, Diddy Kong. His signature red baseball cap makes him instantly recognisable, having appeared alongside DK in many games over the years. Heading away from immediate relatives, we meet Dixie Kong in a fetching pink get-up. She’s Diddy Kong’s girlfriend and the pair often appear together in games.

Finally, the teaser rounds off with Funky Kong, complete with his ‘funky’ sunglasses of course. It’s a point of contention within the Kong fandom as to whether Funky Kong is Donkey Kong’s best friend or his brother but, regardless, the pair are close.

Rumours for LEGO Super Mario later this year include an array of sets and, while they haven’t been confirmed, it’s perfectly possible for one or more of them to include Donkey Kong and his family members.
