Lionsgate’s Twilight TV show could be the spark for upcoming LEGO Ideas set

Fresh news about the upcoming Twilight TV series from Lionsgate offers potential insight into why a LEGO Ideas Twilight set was chosen now.

Variety reports an update on the Twilight TV show, first announced in April 2023, revealing that the vampire TV show will be an animated series. That marks a departure from the live-action movie franchise but could perhaps mean that a more accurate or believable version of the original book series could be on the way. The movies were sometimes criticised for the uncanny valley depictions of characters like Renesmee, which can perhaps be better captured through an animated production.

As for the world of LEGO, this could be the reason behind the LEGO Ideas team choosing LobsterThermidor aka Nick Micheels’s Twilight: Cullen House. After all, Twilight hasn’t been in the cultural landscape in terms of new content since Midnight Sun’s release in 2020. That means there’s nothing much for the LEGO Group to hook a set to – apart from this show.

Although no release schedule has been suggested for the TV show yet, we can likely expect the LEGO Ideas set to be over a year away at this point. This could align with promotion for the new show or even the premiere. Following the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strikes, many production houses are accelerating production and specifically relying on animation to speed up timelines.

It’ll also be intriguing to see whether the LEGO Ideas team includes any nods to the animated show in the design of the set. Nick Micheels’s original submission was focused entirely on the live-action, of course, but it could be a chance for the LEGO Group to include new material – if that’s publicly available at the time. However, it seems more likely that the designers will stick to the original, following in the footsteps of how LEGO Disney approaches IPs with multiple possible inspirations.
