Sony delays upcoming slate of Marvel and more movies
In light of the recent SAG-AFTRA and Writers’ Guild of America strikes, Sony has announced several delays to upcoming Marvel movies.
From Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse to Kraven the Hunter, Sony has announced– as reported by The Hollywood Reporter – that many of their films are being delayed, including one indefinitely.
The strikes from SAG-AFTRA and the Writers’ Guild of America are limiting the amount of promotion members can do on upcoming films, including attending events, while the unions negotiate a better deal for the individuals who make these films possible. With no current end in sight, Sony has opted to alter their cinematic plans for the immediate future.
Here’s a summary of the delayed films, and their new release dates. Some have also had their release dates announced for the first time
Sony’s July 2023 delays to upcoming films
Movie | Original release date | New release date |
---|---|---|
Gran Turismo | August 11, 2023 | August 25 |
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse | March 29, 2024 | Delayed indefinitely |
Kraven the Hunter | October 6 | August 30, 2024 |
Bad Boys 4 | None | June 14, 2024 |
Venom 3 | None | July 12, 2024 |
Karate Kid | June 7 | December 13, 2024 |
Ghostbusters: Afterlife sequel | December 20, 2024 | March 29, 2024 |
Madame Web | February 16, 2024 | February 14, 2024 |
They Listen | August 30, 2024 | Delayed indefinitely |
The delay of the upcoming Kraven the Hunter by nearly a full year is notable as it seems unlikely that there is that much more work to do on the film considering its impending original release date. Instead, it seems that Sony is leaving enough time for a deal to be arranged or for the strikes to otherwise end and promote the movie as much as possible.
Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse’s indefinite delay may seem concerning, but with the amount of work that went into the animated sequel, the original release date may not have been realistic anyway. It seems unlikely that the film will be scrapped considering how well the first two films performed with a worldwide box office of $385 million and $663 million respectively.
