Warner Bros. announces new The Lord of the Rings movies in development

Fans will soon be able to return to Middle-earth thanks to a movie development deal announced by Warner Bros. and New Line.

In a recent Warner Bros. Discovery investor call, it was revealed that the studio (along with New Line) had made a deal allowing for more The Lord of the Rings movies to be developed. The multiyear pact is with current rights holders, Embracer Group AB, a Swedish gaming company who acquired them last year from The Saul Zaentz Company.

As detailed by The Hollywood Reporter, the move will allow for new The Lord of the Rings films to be created by the studios, with the announcement welcome by none other than Peter Jackson and Philippa Boyens. In a statement, Jackson said, “Warner Bros. and Embracer have kept us in the loop every step of the way. We look forward to speaking with them further to hear their vision for the franchise moving forward.”

The rights to Tolkien’s work are spread out across a number of companies, with Amazon holding the TV rights to some aspects of the books and having recently created The Rings of Power series. Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy managed to gross in excess of $2.9 billion at the box office, although there’s no confirmation at this stage that he will be involved in any such future projects.
