LEGO Star Wars 75308 R2-D2 designer video reveals the droid’s details

From a galaxy far, far away the LEGO Star Wars 75308 R2-D2 designer video has finally released, giving us the designer insight into the astromech model.

LEGO design master Kurt Kristiansen takes us behind the scenes of the new LEGO Star Wars model that released both May the fourth and the 50th anniversary of Lucasfilm.

Part usage is discussed and compared to the original model, 10225 R2-D2. To differentiate the two version, Kurt mentions that the model needed to be reinvented in certain ways, such as the central eye for the droid now uses a shield piece that is larger than the other circular sensor bricks.

The front of the model was one of the more challenging elements of the redesign with many new and smaller bricks providing more detail than was possible in the initial set, yet packing all the same functions.

“Well R2-D2 is a bit of a fun thing for me cause I’ve been revisiting the design for almost 10 years,” explains Kurt. “So it was quite a challenge to reinvent the model.”

The LEGO design master also notes his pride in how he built the front of the droid and included all of the necessary functions. 75308 R2-D2 is still out of stock on the official online store, but the elusive droid won’t be retiring anytime soon so there’s plenty of time for a restock. While you wait, you can check out a gallery of images or our review to see what awaits in the LEGO Star Wars set.
