LEGO Star Wars rumoured to celebrate Return of the Jedi’s 40th anniversary in 2023

While LEGO Star Wars has almost entirely passed over Attack of the Clones’ 20th anniversary in 2022, rumours suggest it will be celebrating Return of the Jedi’s 40th anniversary in 2023 in a big way.

Beyond 75333 Obi-Wan Kenobi’s Jedi Starfighter and 40558 Clone Trooper Command Station, this year’s LEGO Star Wars line-up has effectively ignored the 20th anniversary of middle prequel movie Attack of the Clones. Given it’s also the least-represented movie of the first six episodes, that’s perhaps no surprise, but it is a shame for prequel fans who might have been hoping for a new Jango Fett’s Slave I or Bounty Hunter Pursuit, for example.

If you rank Return of the Jedi higher than Attack of the Clones, though, you’ll be pleased to hear that the LEGO Group apparently has big things in store for Episode VI’s 40th anniversary in 2023. According to recent rumours, at least two new additions to the LEGO Star Wars Diorama Collection next year will be inspired by Return of the Jedi – but conflicting reports could actually be pointing to three more sets in the new 18+ range.

Initial rumours listed 75352 Death Star Throne Room Diorama and 75353 Endor Speeder Bike Chase Diorama among the LEGO Star Wars 2023 line-up, both of which are said to be based on scenes we’ve seen before in LEGO (but not yet in the Diorama Collection). However, more recent reports from a separate source now suggest that 75352 could actually be a Jabba’s Palace Diorama instead.

Looking at the wider list of LEGO Star Wars sets rumoured for 2023 – and the gaps therein – the question that jumps out is: why not both? At the moment, nothing is known about set number 75351 beyond a price tag of €69.99. It precedes the two other dioramas in sequence, and falls roughly in line with their prices, too (not to mention the prices of this year’s sets, like 75329 Death Star Trench Run Diorama).

So, maybe we’re actually looking at three new Return of the Jedi dioramas in 2023, spread across set numbers 75351, 75352 and 75353. Those would consist of a Jabba’s Palace Diorama, Death Star Throne Room Diorama and Endor Speeder Bike Chase Diorama, with price tags of €69.99, €79.99 and €99.99. The exact combination of set number, set name and price point is up in the air, but as a fresh line-up of three dioramas, it makes sense.

After all, the LEGO Star Wars Diorama Collection kicked off with a trio of sets this year – 75329 Death Star Trench Run Diorama, 75330 Dagobah Jedi Training Diorama and 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor Diorama – so three more in 2023 seems reasonable. And while the sources of these rumours are muddled, it’s not beyond possibility that they could both be right, in their own ways.

Or maybe one of them was just confused by the ‘throne room’ set name and made an assumption that it was the Death Star, rather than Jabba’s throne. Hard to say.

We’ll find out for sure when the LEGO Group unveils its LEGO Star Wars portfolio for 2023, but until then, take all this info lightly – until officially confirmed, it’s still just rumours and speculation. Either way, fingers crossed for plenty of Return of the Jedi sets over the next 12 months…

I like to think of myself as a journalist first, LEGO fan second, but we all know that’s not really the case. Journalism does run through my veins, though, like some kind of weird literary blood – the sort that will no doubt one day lead to a stress-induced heart malfunction. It’s like smoking, only worse. Thankfully, I get to write about LEGO until then.
