LEGO Star Wars 30654 X-wing Starfighter GWP seems a very familiar set…

There’s something familiar about 30654 X-wing Starfighter GWP – almost as if we’ve recently seen a very similar LEGO Star Wars set?

Star Wars Day 2023 will be taking place next week, with the LEGO Group’s own May the 4th event offering up GWP items, multiplied VIP points and plenty of member rewards from a galaxy far, far away.

The one GWP that many will manage to easily obtain is also the cheapest such May the 4th promotion this year, as 30654 X-wing Starfighter can be picked up with spends of just £35 / $40 / €40 or more on LEGO Star Wars sets. The 82-piece build offers yet another version of the iconic Rebel craft, although it’s obviously nowhere near as detailed as the upcoming 75355 X-wing Starfighter.

But hold on… haven’t we seen this set somewhere before? It would seem so for sure, although it turns out that 30654 X-wing Starfighter is only slightly larger than the 57-piece X-wing model included with this month’s LEGO Star Wars magazine. At first glance you may be mistaken for thinking they’re one and the same, but there are in fact a number of subtle differences that set the two mini-builds apart.

For starters, 30654 X-wing Starfighter has a longer front section to the ship, with a nose cone that has more shape to it, an extra clear piece has been added to the cockpit and the wings have a chunkier look to them. The four laser cannon tips utilise the exact same dark grey pieces on the builds, with a silver stud representing R2-D2 on both models. Likewise, the engines of the two craft feature a similar construction and colour scheme, while the top of 30654 X-wing Starfighter also gains a few cosmetic pieces.

Other than the slight size and piece differences between the two LEGO Star Wars models, it’s ultimately cost that may determine which version you go for. While 30654 X-wing Starfighter can be obtained from May 1 to May 7 with spends on LEGO Star Wars sets over £35 / $40 / €40, the smaller ship can be picked up now for the bargain price of just £5.99 with LEGO Star Wars magazine Issue 94.
