LEGO Marvel matches James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 focus

As the release date for the next wave of LEGO Marvel sets approaches, all eyes are on one character in particular.

While speaking to Total Film, as reported by Games Radar, Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3 director James Gunn described everyone’s favourite raccoon as ‘the secret protagonist’ and the reason for his directorial return to the trilogy.

“The most important thing for me was Rocket’s story, and then, following that, everybody else,” said Gunn. “Rocket is the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and has always been the centre of it for me; and this is really fulfilling that.

“The reason I came back, and decided to do this movie, was because I really felt like Rocket’s story needed to be told – and it was left hanging after Vol 2. So that’s the most important thing.”

Clearly, Rocket will play a pivotal role in the upcoming film – and that’s reflected in the LEGO Marvel wave, as well. It’s known that the LEGO Group and whatever franchise it works with (such as Marvel Studios) will collaborate on waves, but the secrecy around upcoming films and TV shows can lead to a bit of a disconnect between sets and their on-screen counterpart.

However, the upcoming LEGO Marvel wave reflects Gunn’s sentiment of focusing on Rocket, with one of the sets, 76254 Baby Rocket’s Ship, featuring not just one, but two versions of the raccoon. The other three sets include one new addition to the helmet range and two more general sets, with Rocket being the only character to get his own focused set.

For the sake of both Rocket and Baby Rocket, we can only hope that it’s a happy ending for him. 76254 Baby Rocket’s Ship has both the older and younger versions of the gun-toting animal, so perhaps the film will include some sort of time travel that sees them reunited somehow, rather than mere flashbacks as seen in the trailer. After everything Rocket has been through, fingers crossed that Gunn has given him a happy ending – and not the more final ending than some fans are worried about.
